Rain Water Harvesting

Hello friends. There is a lot scarcity of water in today's times. Many areas in Mumbai are facing water cut down, with availability of water for various purposes for only a few hours in a day. It is important for us to save water so that our future generations can also get water.

Once my father told me about rain water harvesting. He explained to me in detail about the entire procedure. Today I am going to tell you something about it.

There are several methods by which rain water can be harvested. They are as follows:
1. Surface runoff harvesting: In urban area rainwater flows away as surface runoff. This runoff could caught and used for recharging aquifers by adopting appropriate methods.

2. Rooftop rainwater harvesting:  It is a system of catching rainwater where it falls. In the rooftop harvesting the roof becomes the catchments, and the rainwater is collected from the roof of the house/ building. It can either be stored in a tank or diverted to artificial recharge system. this method is expensive and if implemented properly helps in augmenting the groundwater level of the area.

Some more explanation on Rooftop rainwater harvesting as explained by my father and also on what I remember is - on a building's roof there is a hollow in which the rainwater falls. That water is led through a drainage pipe which is connected through a water tank. There are many pipes connected to the tank that lead to different sources such as taps, showers etc. We use that rain water that is clean for us. We use it for bathing, cleaning our houses, cleaning the vessels etc. This is the best way of using water. I have seen my neighbor using this method.

So friends, hope you have understood rain water harvesting which I had tried to explain in short.
